IFK Gothenburg has decided not to renew the contract with Warner Hahn, which means that the 30-year-old goalkeeper leaves Gothenburg after just one season.
When Giannis Anesis, Tom Amos and Ole Soderberg left Blovitt after last season, no one really knew who would be guarding Gothenburg's goal in 2022. 19-year-old Adam Ingi Benediktsson has certainly featured in the last two Allsvenskan 2021 games, but many felt more routine and breadth was required from the goalkeeper. In this year's pre-season, Pontus Farnerud picked up the phone and sent a signal to national team goalkeeper Surinam's Warner Khan, who after a few seasons in Heerenveen then belonged to Go Ahead Eagles in the top Dutch division. Something that could have been perceived as a panic signing was confirmed when the contract duration was one year with the possibility of another. Will Khan simply fill the void that existed until Benediktsson reached enough maturity to become one?
Weak in the Swedish Cup
Khan was immediately thrown into the hot air and stood in all four cup matches in February and March without making much of an impression. A clean sheet against Landskrona was followed by four conceded goals against Norrby, Mjölby and Elfsborg.
It was quite dangerous, but then the series started and Warner Hahn played many times. When the team failed and let go of scoring chances, Hahn was there and stopped most of them, as the highest save percentage in Allsvenskan could confirm. Add to this Manuel Neuer with sensitive feet, who several times let the blue and white forwards go after quick shots.
Khan felt very good in Gothenburg off the field and also took the opportunity to marry his wife in the garden society. After eight clean sheets in the first twenty games of the series and the highest save percentage in the Allsvenskan, Khan's dominance disappeared with the arrival of Osen and Dahlberg. There was one more dry spell for Hahn, against AIK at home in October, but by then he had managed to overtake Samuel Brolin of Mjölby in save percentage and Ricardo Friedrich of Kalmar in net goals.
Warner Hahn now leaves IFK Göteborg after just 31 matches in the A team. But his dominant efforts in the blue and white shirt mean that many will not forget him first. For me, he is undoubtedly the best goalkeeper I have seen in Blovitt, even if he is in stiff competition with Bengan Andersson, Kim Christensen and John Alvboge.
It's a shame that Blowitt is losing the best goaltender in the series who also wanted to continue, but at the same time, it's clear that the alternative with Pontus Dahlberg may be better in the long run.
