In the southern U.S. state of Virginia, casino operator Rush Street Gaming has announced the start of construction work for its future Rivers Casino Portsmouth.
The Chicago-based company reportedly used an official press release issued on Tuesday to state that the $300 million facilities will open on a 57-acre plot of land about three miles southwest of downtown Portsmouth in "early 2023" and will include a large casino, a four-star hotel, and a 3,000-seat live entertainment venue. The company said the 400,000-square-foot project will include a BetRivers-branded retail sports club as well as several upscale restaurants and will be the company's seventh gambling establishment alongside compatriots in Illinois, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Greg Carlin is CEO of Rush Street Gaming, and he told attendees at a special groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday that completion of the Rivers Casino Portsmouth project will create about 1,300 full-time jobs and generate about $16.3 million in new annual tax revenue for the city of Portsmouth. In addition, the boss said his company regularly generates more than $1 billion in annual gambling revenue, and the casino staff has consistently won "best place to work" or "best workplace" awards.

Referendum Ratification:
Voters in the city of Portsmouth gave Rush Street Gaming permission to begin work on the Rivers Casino Portsmouth project in November 2021, with two-thirds approval of the relevant local ballot initiative. This approval, which echoed similar casino approvals in Danville, Bristol, and Norfolk, Virginia, was followed by the start of preparatory work, which included clearing the abandoned site of vegetation, leveling and soil testing.

For his part, Portsmouth Mayor Shannon Glover told those in attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony that Rush Street Gaming has pledged to maintain its record of using local minority, women-owned, and veteran-owned small businesses when building and operating its future Rivers Casino Portsmouth facility.
